Words from the Cross: We Need Each Other

“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” John 19: 26-27

The retelling of Jesus’ crucifixion in the Bible mentions people following him, both women and men; onlookers standing below the cross as he suffered.  John tells us more about the people witnessing his death; Jesus’ mother, Mary, Mary’s sister, Mary Magdalene and his disciple, John.

In John 19, Jesus sees his mother nearby calls to her, “Woman, here is your son.” indicating that John will take care of her.  He says to John, “Here is your mother.” Jesus’ gesture is compassionate, assuring his mother of a  son-like companion in John and giving John an opportunity to show compassion through his care for Mary.  Jesus’ concern for the people closest to him demonstrates not only his kindness but also the value of relationships with people. He shows us a clear truth: People on earth need each other.

The human beings of this world need the talents, the presence, the joy, the connection of each other to survive and thrive on earth.  The power of God’s love is not complete until our hearts link with other hearts.

Throughout the gospels, Jesus interacted with many people, modeling a deeper level of relating which God hopes for each of us.  Beyond his close association to the disciples, anyone who crossed paths with Jesus did not just have a quick encounter, but a meaningful exchange that influenced their lives.

Zacchaeus, a tax collector noticed by Jesus, felt the richness of Jesus’ gaze as Jesus asked to eat dinner with him.

The Samaritan woman at the well conversed with Jesus long enough to realize the genuine care and knowledge he possessed.

Even the children around him were welcomed with joy and laughter!

Jesus knew how to relate to others and he asks us to do the same.  Two qualities stand out as Jesus related to others.

Jesus listened with full attention. His eyes intently watching. His mind absorbing the words and the needs of the person he spoke to. A connection formed.

Jesus responded in love.  His words and actions displayed a genuine care and concern for the other person.  The bond increased in love.

When we consider God’s creation, we must also focus on the people God has created.

Each person is needed on this earth.

Each person carries a specific purpose to help our world.

God has provided other people in our lives to bring encouragement to our hearts.  We gain different perspectives on information we need to know.  We experience joy and fun with those around us! We need every person in our life.

One snowflake cannot make a beautiful winter landscape.  It takes millions of snowflakes to cover the world with a blanket of magnificence, a carpet of much-needed moisture.  This principle works with humanity as well.  We need every person to complete the picture of love and beauty in God’s kingdom.

Reaching in (allowing God’s word to work in your soul):  Read 1 Corinthians 12 which highlights the gifts and talents each person brings to the world.

Reaching out (taking God’s word into the world):  Reflect on Jesus’ method for interacting and connecting with others: listening intently and responding in love.  Remember these qualities when you are praying, knowing that you are being heard and loved.  Remember these qualities when you interact with others and spread God’s kingdom on this earth.
