A weekly devotion designed to bring the life of Jesus to your daily living

Getting Comfortable

“Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

I have never been a fan of change.  Even re-organizing kitchen cabinets and searching for items in their new places can put my world in a spin.  Change often feels awkward, different, and takes adjustment.  Routine is predictable, reliable and offers comfort.  Perhaps that is why the verse above is so appealing.  Jesus is reliable and comfortable and is not ever going to change.

He is always going to be there.

He is always going to love us.

He is always going to help us.

He wants the best for us.

He is forever and ever the same.

A new year is upon us and just like the year before, changes will come that feel awkward and we will need to adjust. How can we make these changes more comfortably?  Live with God–for He is the our stable ground that never changes.

In Luke 10, Jesus taught Martha and Mary an important truth that keeps us devoted to God.  Martha and Mary are both delighted to have Jesus visit their home, but their reactions to him are very different.  Martha has a vision of what the house should be like for Jesus and is rushing around, perfecting every detail of his visit without a bit of help from Mary.

Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus, spending time soaking in his presence,  reveling in his wisdom.  Who is the most comfortable?

Jesus makes it plain that Mary’s decision is the best.  In Luke 10: 42, he says, “Only one thing is needed.  Mary has chosen what is best and I won’t take it away from her.”  Sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to his wisdom; that’s where the real comfort is.   How comfortable do you want to get this year?

We know that many “Martha moments” await us this year.  There are tasks that must be done, but perhaps taking time with Jesus each day to bring his vision into our lives and to lean on his presence for help will make our Martha moments more enriching, more fulfilling . . . more comfortable.

Reaching in (allowing God’s word to work in your soul):

Frequently take time through the week or the year to read Jesus’ words recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. Sit at His feet. Listen to His words.  Soak in His presence.  Revel in His wisdom.

Reaching out (taking God’s word into the world):

Do you know any one going through a change in their life this year?  Send them the scripture above from Hebrews.  Or send them this devotion!
